Mental Health Awareness –
The Benefits of Exercise for Mental Health
Exercise is a powerful tool for enhancing mental health. Beyond physical fitness, it offers numerous benefits for both emotional and psychological well-being.
- Reduces Stress and Anxiety: Exercise triggers the release of endorphins, the brain’s natural mood lifters. This helps reduce stress, anxiety, and tension.
- Boosts Mood and Fights Depression: Physical activity increases the production of serotonin and dopamine, which are key to improving mood.
- Improves Sleep Quality: Exercise can help you regulate your sleep patterns, leading to more restful nights. Better sleep also contributes to improved mental clarity and emotional stability. It is true that you feel better if you ‘sleep like a baby’
- Enhances Self-Esteem: Reaching fitness goals, no matter how small, boosts self-esteem and confidence. Feeling strong and healthy can improve your overall self-image and mental strength.
- Sharpens Focus and Memory: Regular exercise promotes better cognitive function by encouraging brain cell growth. It helps sharpen focus, improve memory, and clear mental fog, which can be very challenging for many
- Fosters Social Connections: Joining group fitness classes or participating in team sports can foster social interaction, which is vital for mental health. Social engagement through exercise both in person or in a group online can reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.
Incorporating exercise into your routine doesn’t require a huge time commitment. It can be as short as 15mins and it shouldn’t burn you out
Whether it’s a daily walk, in person or online exercise class, a swim or a gym session, any movement can support your mental well-being.

Do you want more from a Pilates class?
I like to add current themes such as Football/Wimbledon to the content of my classes
We may focus on particular areas of the body needed for that theme or incorporate some relevant equipment or a combination of both.
This approach gives some Pilates exercises a different feel, makes it fun, adds some focus and can also add extra challenges
Mental Health and Fitness Classes
Hi Back to my online classes this week after a week of covid & despite still not being 100 % it felt so good.
I think there are people reading this that will appreciate that classes can be so much more than fitness.
My small group of lovely people really boost my mood, make me want to show up for them even when I don’t feel like it, they make me smile & laugh & that’s a good a tonic as getting & maintaining fitness.
There are some that say you can’t get that interaction online but you so can.
Zoom classes are an absolute winner for me & I really hope that I give that positivity & smiles back to my very lovely clients.
The struggle with mental health is real & finding the right group of people to be with really helps & it can be online

Supplements
I am an all rounder Health and Fitness specialist and I want to share some of the subjects that my clients often ask me about:
Supplements is something that can be a bit of a controversial subject and a bit of a minefield and also personal preference.
I do take supplements and I have experimented with lots of different ones over the years. I do eat a good diet at least 80% of the time which is important but I do feel that we don’t always get all the nutrients we need and that at particular times/phases of our life we do need a boost to get our body into that great condition that we want it to be in.
What supplements are my game changes?
- Magnesium really helps me to improve the quality of my sleep which I have struggled with for years
- Vitamin C for general vitality, energy and to boost the immune system. I like to use the effervescent tablets and put them in my daily water to drink throughout the day.
- Zinc – Personally I often struggle if I am lacking in Zinc especially my immune system and my throat and lets face it teaching regular classes means a lot of talking!
- Vitamin D – I can’t stress enough the importance of vitamin D especially with the lack of sunshine that we get in the UK!
Tips for taking supplements
- Please ensure the supplements you are taking don’t counteract any other medication that you may be on – always check that first
- Buy good quality supplements not the cheap ‘bargains’ – you really do get what you pay for
- Build up slowly – when you start taking a supplement sometimes the supplement instructions say take multiple a day but don’t start with that take 1 a day and slowly build up if required and with no adverse reactions. We all have a different body composition and we are not all designed to take the same number of tablets.
- Give the supplements time to work – they come in monthly or more pots/packages for a reason. Don’t take for a few days and then say this isn’t working – give it time – as they say Rome wasn’t built in a day!
Hope this helps.

Pilates with Equipment – The Benefits
LETS TALK EQUIPMENT!
Adding in different forms of equipment in Pilates classes is very beneficial – it gets your mind and body to focus in different ways, it can add resistance to exercises – making you work that little bit harder, it can add support to an exercise to make you perform it a bit better.
It adds variety to traditional moves and its FUN!!
I am aware not everyone likes every bit of equipment or has everything so I always give options to improvise, do the exercise with a different piece of kit or simply do it without.
Wednesday morning Pilates is a class specifically using equipment but I will be adding equipment into other classes too starting with Monday Evening Pilates.
Create yourself an equipment bag/box etc – I recommend
- Exercise mat
- Long Resistance Band
- Loop/Activation Band
- Mini Ball
- Tennis/spikey ball
- Pair of hand weights or full water bottles
- Step or yoga block or large hard-backed book
- Pair of Gliders or paper plates
- Foam Roller
If you need any help/advice on equipment please let me know – I do have some mini balls, long resistance bands, gliders, foam rollers and a few loop bands for sale. Inexpensive equipment can be found in many supermarkets, large sports stores and online

SUMMER TIMETABLE
Its traditional English holiday time although we seem to be a short of the sun here in the Midlands!
During these next week weeks I run a slightly reduced timetable of classes but I extend the length of time that packages last and that recordings last for – giving you more flexibility.
The timetable will vary slightly each week over the summer and is posted onto the class timetable page of me website every Friday ready for the next week. It is simple and easy to book. Just click on the calendar on your chosen date, pick your class and follow the booking instructions.
To get a recording rather than do a LIVE class you still just book the class but you don’t attend so you are a No show and automatically get sent the recording as a link via email – simply click and do at your convenience and you have 5 days after the day it is sent to do it.
Wimbledon Special
This week in Fitness Pilates I am using tennis balls 🎾 Great for mobility, stretches, grip strength & focus & fun!
Hopefully its going to be a sunny day and we’ll be getting outside for some Vitamin D and there will be some gardening going on ( not with me though!)
Start you day off with a Pilates Core, Back and stretch workout – prep for your gardening and all done by 10.30am and you can enjoy your day.
Gardening uses muscles you did’nt realise you had – you put yourselves in awkward positions for a period of time and lots of back and knee ache comes from gardening so whilst I appreciate its popular and theraputic your body needs core strength and regular stretching to perform correctly – I’ll teach you Pilates – you do my garden!
